Offense Comes Alive in 14-8 Victory Over Army; Bulldogs Sweep the Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Citadel (4-2) secured a 14-8 victory over Army (2-4) on Sunday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
 
The Bulldogs took an early lead with a three-run homer from Zach Hunt in the first inning. Army responded in the top of the second with an RBI single from Josiah Overbeek, narrowing the gap to 3-1.
 
Jayden Williams provided a boost for the Bulldogs with a two-run RBI triple to right field, and Michael Gibson drove in Williams from third base to give the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead after two innings.
 
A William Parker two-run homer for the Black Knights brought the score to 6-3 in the third, but the Bulldogs responded with a run on a wild pitch to make it 7-3 in the bottom of the third.
 
The Black Knights narrowed the Bulldogs' lead to three with an RBI single from Thomas Schreck. Phillips Daniels singled to left field, driving in Williams and giving The Citadel an 8-4 lead over Army.
 
In the eighth inning, Miles Barbrey and Daniels reached base, and TJ Anderson launched a three-run homer to left field, making it a 13-4 game. After this, Landon Kahl was hit by a pitch, and Jackson Proctor drew a bases-loaded walk, adding another run.
 
Army went on to score four in the top of the ninth inning to cut The Citadel's lead to six runs at 14-8.
 
Williams recorded three runs and two RBIs, including a triple. Hunt posted three runs, two hits, and three RBIs, highlighted by a home run, his second in back-to-back games. Daniels tallied two hits, marking his third consecutive game with at least two hits. Barbrey recorded two stolen bases, drew two walks, and scored once. Anderson hit his first home run of the season, while adding a double and driving in three runs.
 
On the mound, Riley Ballard pitched 2.2 innings, striking out five and earning the win. Andrew Bowers had a solid outing, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no hits allowed.
 
For Army, Robbie Penswick took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. William Leahy provided relief by pitching 3.0 innings with one earned run on two hits, but also issued four walks.
 
The Bulldogs are set to travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for a three-game series against Florida State from Feb. 27 to Mar. 1.
