TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Citadel (4-4) lost both games of the doubleheader against #21 Florida State (7-2), 6-2 and 2-1, on Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium.
Bryce Coulter pitched a notable 8.0 innings in game two, striking out four while surrendering zero earned runs.
Game One Recap
The Bulldogs claimed a 2-0 edge in the fifth.
Miles Barbrey singled and stole second, capitalizing on a Florida State defensive error.
Garrett Fulmer reached on another error, bringing Barbrey home.
Matthew Lively's RBI single up the middle scored Fulmer.
The Seminoles cut the lead to one run at 2-1 in the bottom of the frame thanks to an RBI groundout by Eli Putnam.
In the decisive sixth inning, Florida State capitalized on a walk that allowed Brayden Dowd to reach base, followed by a wild pitch that moved him to second. A sacrifice fly RBI by Kelvyn Paulino Jr., a two-RBI single by Gabe Fraser, and an RBI single up the middle from Putnam put the Seminoles ahead, 5-2.
Florida State added a run in the eighth on an RBI single from John Stuetzer to take a 6-2 lead.
Lively contributed with a hit and an RBI. Barbrey added a hit, a stolen base and scored a run.
On the mound,
Will Holmes pitched 5.2 innings, striking out six while allowing three hits, five runs, and zero earned runs.
Trip Brown struck out three over two innings, giving up one run on three hits and reaching a season-high three strikeouts.
Andrew Buffkin made a brief appearance, recording one out, allowing two hits and issuing one walk.
For the Seminoles, Wes Mendes got the win with a six-inning start, giving up three hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four. John Abraham picked up the save with three perfect innings, striking out three without allowing any hits or walks.
Game Two Recap
Florida State scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a throwing error by the Bulldogs, allowing Gabe Fraser to cross the plate.
Aryan Patel worked a walk and advanced to third on a throwing error after
Jayden Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt. Patel scored to even the score at 1-1 in the third inning
Florida State clinched the win with a walk-off during the 10th frame, taking advantage of a fielder's choice combined with a throwing error to set up the winning run from Chase Williams.
Miles Barbrey hit a double, while
Zach Hunt and
Phillips Daniels each recorded hits. Patel scored the only run for the Bulldogs and drew two walks.
On the mound, Coulter delivered a strong performance as he pitched a career-high 8.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run, while striking out four.
Ben Brash took the loss after surrendering one unearned run in a third of an inning, while
Steven Trone held the line with a scoreless ninth frame.
On the Seminoles' side, Kevin Mebil earned the win with three hitless innings, striking out four. Starter Trey Beard pitched 5.0 innings, allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out six.
