GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Braxton Williams scored 25 points as The Citadel (9-21, 6-11 SoCon) fell to Furman (19-11, 10-7 SoCon), 72-51, on Wednesday night at Timmons Arena.
Furman led 33-31 at halftime in a first half that featured seven ties and multiple lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points in the opening 20 minutes. Williams scored 17 first-half points and connected on four 3-pointers to keep the Bulldogs within two at the break.
Furman outscored The Citadel 39-20 in the second half. The Paladins finished with a 50-20 advantage on the glass and recorded 19 second-chance points, while converting 19-of-25 free-throw attempts.
Williams' performance marked his third consecutive 20-point game and his ninth of the season, which ranks seventh in the Southern Conference in total 20-point performances. He has now recorded five games with five or more made 3-pointers this year, including back-to-back performances.
Sola Adebisi added eight points, four rebounds and three blocks, tying his single-game season high in blocks. He remains among the top five in the Southern Conference in blocks this season.
Christian Moore finished with eight points. The Citadel shot 38.9 percent from the field and committed 10 turnovers.
Charles Johnston led Furman with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Cooper Bowser contributed 14 points, and the Paladins totaled 34 bench points.
Following the game, head coach
Ed Conroy addressed the media:
"We did enough offensively in the first half to stay within two at the break, and Braxton gave us a strong first half scoring the basketball. In the second half, we weren't consistent enough on that end, and the rebounding margin was too big. When it's 50-20 on the glass, that's difficult to overcome. Credit to them, they controlled the interior and created extra possessions."
The Citadel concludes the regular season Saturday at Wofford. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
