MARTIN, Tenn. — The Citadel (6-9) dropped the opening contest of a three-game series against UT-Martin (9-8), falling by a 3-2 margin on Friday night at Skyhawk Baseball Field.
Jayden Williams stole two bases and had two hits with one RBI.
Phillips Daniels also had two hits, an RBI, and reached base with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
TJ Anderson added two hits.
Will Holmes struck out eight over a 6.0-inning start, allowing just three hits and two earned runs.
Zane Davis pitched a scoreless frame, giving up no hits and issuing one walk.
Steven Trone took the loss after facing four batters in 0.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
CJ Van Slooten threw 0.2 innings without allowing a hit or walk.
For the Skyhawks, TJ Grines led the team with two hits, including a double, and drove in one RBI. Gehrig Wright earned the win after pitching 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or walk. Mason Little secured the save by tossing the final inning and striking out one batter.
"I thought we pitched and played defense well enough to win the game," said head coach
Russell Triplett. "We got a solid start from Holmes. Offensively, we had a lot of good ABs but lacked quality ABs with runners in scoring position, and we struggled to execute with a runner on 3B with less than two outs. It's tough to win one-run games when you leave 13 guys on base."
The Bulldogs are set to face the Skyhawks on Saturday, March 14 at Skyhawk Baseball Field, with the first pitch set for 4 p.m. ET.
