Late Lead Slips Away as The Citadel Falls at No. 7 Georgia, 8-5

ATHENS, Ga. — The Citadel (8-10) held a late lead into the final innings, but No. 7 Georgia (18-4) capped a late comeback with a walk-off home run in the ninth to hand the visiting Bulldogs an 8–5 loss Tuesday afternoon at Foley Field.

Zach Hunt led the way with two RBIs and one hit in three at-bats. Jayden Williams contributed with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. TJ Anderson added two hits, a run scored, and a stolen base. Lane Tobin posted two hits, including a double, an RBI, and stole two bases. Notably, the game marked the team's third straight contest with at least nine hits.

On the mound, Trip Brown pitched 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk with no runs. Andrew Buffkin took over for 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and three walks while striking out one. Jack Thunberg provided 2.1 innings of relief, surrendering one hit, two walks, and striking out one.

Ben Brash allowed three hits and two earned runs over 1.1 innings. Michael Gibson gave up five hits and three earned runs in 0.2 innings. Zane Davis took the loss after allowing three earned runs on one hit and two walks.

Georgia's offense was led by Kolby Branch, who went 3-for-5 with two home runs, including a walk-off, with four RBIs. Caleb Jameson earned the win by tossing a scoreless inning and striking out three.

"I believed our guys deserved to win; we were prepared to play from the beginning. We had numerous team at-bats, guys were selfless and precise, and showed resilience with two strikes," said head coach Russell Triplett. "We pitched exceptionally well for six innings against one of the nation's top offenses. The bullpen kept us out of trouble and didn't allow any inherited runners to score. We only made a few defensive mistakes and, on the mound, a few late ones, which a strong offense like Georgia will capitalize on."

Up next, the Bulldogs host No. 19 Clemson at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 18, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
