ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Highlighted by a
Sola Adebisi go-ahead 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining, The Citadel (11-21, 7-1 SoCon) knocked off No. 8 Chattanooga (13-19, 7-11 SoCon), 88-85, in the First Round of the Southern Conference Championship on Friday evening at Harrah's Cherokee Center. The basket was the Bulldogs' 15th triple of the game, setting a program record for most made shots from beyond the arc in a Southern Conference postseason contest.
Adebisi led The Citadel with 26 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Keynan Davis finished with 20 points while
Braxton Williams added 17 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Christian Moore scored 14 points.
Jordan Frison and Tate Darner led Chattanooga with 16 points each.
The Citadel shot 54.2 percent from the field on 32-of-59 shooting, made 15-of-31 from 3-point range and recorded 18 assists while committing six turnovers.
The Bulldogs entered halftime tied 49-49 after making 10 first-half 3-pointers. The Citadel led by as many as eight points during the opening half and shot 54.8 percent from the field.
The Citadel opened the second half on an 8-0 run and built a 62-51 lead after consecutive triples from Moore. Chattanooga responded and moved back in front, 70-69, with 10:02 remaining. The Mocs held a 85-84 edge with 1:23 remaining before Williams made a free throw to tie the game with 55 seconds left. After a defensive stop and a turnover forced by
Eze Wali, Adebisi connected from beyond the arc to give the Bulldogs the decisive advantage. Chattanooga's final 3-point attempt missed as time expired.
The Citadel advances to the Quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championship and will face top-seeded ETSU on Saturday, March 7 at noon ET.
