4/27/2026 2:30:00 PM

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel senior Michael Gibson earned recognition as the Southern Conference Player of the Week, per announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.

"I am thankful that the Lord has given me this opportunity to glorify him in this way. It was a fun week, but it's always a blessing to be around these guys every day," said Gibson. "There's no other group I would rather compete with or work with. I'm excited to see what we do in the next couple of weeks."

Gibson earns his first Player of the Week honor as a Bulldog and is the second Bulldog to receive conference honors since Bryce Coulter was named Pitcher of the Week on March 2.

A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Gibson recorded a .500 batting average during the past week, going 7-for-14 at the plate with two doubles, one home run, and 5 RBIs in four games. He hit a home run against Georgia Southern on April 22, then followed up with a six-hit weekend against UNCG, going 2-for-3 with a double in a 2-1 win on Friday, April 24 and 3-for-4 with a double in a 10-1 win on Saturday, April 25.

Gibson earned his team-leading fifth save of the season on Friday, April 24 against the Spartans, good for second in the Southern Conference. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and one walk, with zero runs and five strikeouts.

"It was a fun week to watch Mike on both sides of the ball. It's a pleasure to watch a guy excel at the plate and on the mound in the same game," said The Citadel pitching coach James Reeves. "He has worked extremely hard to prepare his body to consistently be an impact performer on both sides of the ball. Excited for him to receive this well-deserved honor."

"Gibby had an incredible week. I'm so happy for him," said head coach Russell Triplett. "He is the best teammate and deserves to succeed. "
