ROCK HILL, S.C. — Bolstered by a five-run second inning and an 11-hit overall performance, The Citadel (16-16) secured a 10–8 midweek victory over Winthrop (22-11) on Wednesday night at Founders Field.
Christian Stratis went 2-for-3, including a double and a season-high three RBIs.
Lane Tobin and
Zach Hunt each recorded two hits and a double.
Phillips Daniels scored two runs and generated two RBIs.
Sam Dansky hit his first home run of the season and posted a season-high four RBIs.
Matthew Lively stole three bases.
The Bulldogs tallied 11 hits and six stolen bases for the game, marking their second consecutive contest with at least 11 hits. They also scored at least ten runs for the second straight game. The Citadel recorded a season-high six hit-by-pitches, three of which came from Tobin.
Riley Ballard started the game, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two.
Liam Foley pitched 1.1 innings, facing six batters and fanning one. CJ Van Slooten contributed with one scoreless inning, allowing just one hit and earning the win, bringing his record to 1-1.
Andrew Buffkin earned a save by pitching 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit and recording one strikeout.
"A gritty team win. Ballard did an excellent job overcoming numerous defensive mistakes early on with damage control in the first inning. Then we responded with five runs right after that. Foley and Van Slooten excelled in finishing innings," said head coach
Russell Triplett. "Buffkin was outstanding late in the game. Our offense responded every time it got close and had tough at-bats all day. Great start to the week with two midweek wins against strong teams."
The Bulldogs travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for a three-game away conference series against Wofford from April 10-12.
