Early Lead Fades as Bulldogs Drop Midweek Contest at No. 20 Coastal Carolina, 5-3

CONWAY, S.C. — Despite taking an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, The Citadel (27-24) fell to No. 20 Coastal Carolina (35-17) via a 5–3 decision Tuesday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

TJ Anderson contributed by scoring one run, collecting one hit, and drawing one walk in the game. Michael Gibson added to the offense with one hit and one RBI as well.

Andrew Bowers started on the mound for The Citadel, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out one batter. Liam Foley appeared in relief, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings without allowing a hit and recording one strikeout. Bryce Coulter took the loss after giving up two runs, including one earned, across 1.2 frames with a strikeout. Mason Yokum closed for the Bulldogs with a scoreless inning, striking out one and allowing no hits.

For Coastal Carolina, Blake Barthol and Domenico Tozzi each hit a home run. Rex Watson collected two hits and two RBIs as well. Case Bosch earned the win after throwing 2.0 innings with no hits and four strikeouts. Ryan Lynch secured the save after throwing the final frame  and striking out one batter.

"I didn't think we played very well today. I thought we competed in the first inning, but then we were about as poor as we've been offensively for the next eight innings," head coach Russell Triplett said. "I thought we did some good things on the mound, but we're still struggling to get ahead. We didn't put many guys on base, and we were falling behind against a good-hitting team. We got beat tonight, but I didn't think we played very well, so we'll continue to work to get better before heading to VMI."

Up next, The Citadel finishes the regular season with a three-game series in Lexington, Va., facing VMI from May 14-16.
