LEXINGTON, Va. — Behind a 10-strikeout performance from
Will Holmes, The Citadel (28-24, 9-10 SoCon) secured a decisive 9–2 victory over VMI (28-24, 3-16 SoCon) on Thursday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Lane Tobin scored four runs, collected a double and stole a base.
Jayden Williams hit his third home run of the season and drove in two RBIs.
TJ Anderson recorded three hits and four RBIs, bringing his season total to 40 -- good for the most from an individual since 2023 (Noah Mitchell, 43); further, he recorded his 15th stolen base of the season, giving Bulldogs six players with 15 or more stolen bases for the campaign.
Michael Gibson tallied two hits and recorded his 26th RBI as well.
Holmes delivered a dynamic performance on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings without allowing a run, striking out 10 batters, and giving up just three hits, securing his sixth win of the season in the process. The senior now has two consecutive games with 10 or more strikeouts and just needs one more strikeout to reach 100 on the season.
Zane Davis contributed 2.0 innings in relief, surrendering one earned run on two hits and striking out one, closing out the game for the Bulldogs.
For VMI, Ayden Schnarrs went 2-for-3 at the plate. Justin Spiegel took the loss after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs and striking out six.
"Really nice day for
Will Holmes. It's awesome to see all the hard work he has put into this pay off and to see it trend at the right time. He attacked the zone all day with command of three pitches and gave us another quality start," said pitching coach
James Reeves. "Our offense put him and our defense in a position to attack all night, with early run support and a steady stream of runs throughout the game. Zaner came in and did his job, pounding the zone to close out the game for us."
Up next, the Bulldogs face the Keydets on May 15 at Gray-Minor Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
