Tobin Fuels 12-7 Bulldogs Victory, The Citadel Completes Sweep of VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. — A two-home run performance from Lane Tobin paced The Citadel (30-24, 11-10) to a 12-7 victory over VMI (28-26, 3-18) at Gray-Minor Stadium on Saturday, completing the weekend sweep of the rival Keydets.

Notably, the win gave the Bulldogs their first consecutive 30-win seasons since 2009 and 2010, when The Citadel achieved 37 and 43 wins, respectively.

Tobin hit his first two home runs of the season and drove in a total four runs, recording a personal season-best for runs batted in. Sam Dansky crossed home plate three times, a season-high for him, and stole two bases. Zach Hunt collected three hits, including a double, and scored twice, marking the second consecutive game he has recorded at least three hits. Christian Stratis drove in two runs with a double and added a run scored.

Tobin joins Michael Gibson and Hunt as the most recent Bulldog to hit two home runs in a single game. Gibson hit two home runs against Charleston Southern on March 7, and Hunt hit two against Charleston Southern on March 14.

Trip Brown started for the Bulldogs, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out one with no walks. Mason Yokum faced only two batters, issuing one walk in his brief appearance. Liam Foley contributed 1.2 innings, striking out two and giving up one hit.

Bryce Coulter secured the win, tossing two innings, striking out one and yielding one hit-by-pitch. Steven Trone and Ben Brash closed the game, with the former giving up a solo home run and the latter recording two outs on seven pitches.

For VMI, Grayson Fitzwater and Cole Raile each hit a home run. Gabe Jenkins also went 3-for-4 at the plate. Andrew Jones took the loss after throwing 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs, and striking out one.

"Great finish to the weekend and the regular season. We pitched and played solid defense for eight innings. Our offense was solid, with good at-bats all day. Seven different guys scored runs. I thought we had some tough at-bats to start innings, which led to runs," said head coach Russell Triplett. "Tobin set the tone in the first at-bat of the day. He then came up big with another HR later in the game. These guys are playing good, clean baseball right now, and it will take that or better to have a chance next week. I know they will be excited about the opportunity."

Up next, The Citadel heads to Greenville, S.C., for the 2026 Southern Conference Tournament on May 20.
