The Citadel Falls in Extra Frames to Samford in Series Finale, 5-4

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Citadel (27-23, 8-10 SoCon) fell to Samford (26-23, 10-8 SoCon) via a 5-4 margin in an extra innings series finale on Saturday evening at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

TJ Anderson contributed offensively with a double, scoring one run and driving in another. Michael Gibson added two hits, including a double, and recorded an RBI. Lane Tobin collected a hit, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Trip Brown delivered a standout performance for the Bulldogs, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing only one hit and one earned run, and striking out eight batters. Michael Gibson logged 1.1 innings in relief, yielding three earned runs on four hits, including a home run, and striking out one.

Ben Brash faced one batter without allowing a hit or run, while Bryce Coulter pitched 1.1 innings with no hits and one earned run on a hit-by-pitch. Zane Davis closed with 0.1 inning, allowing the game-winning hit en route to the loss.

For Samford, Luke Boykin hit two home runs and recorded three RBIs. Zak Spurrier received the win after throwing 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and striking out six.

"A tough, tough, tough day, but still, still a good day, because we graduated a lot of guys, and that's what it's all about," head coach Russell Triplett said. "We got a great start from Trip Brown, who dominated and kept us in the game. We just struggled with the free bases late in the game, and it kind of got us. We thought we had good at-bats throughout the day. We just left too many guys on base. And, you know, a credit to them. They made some big pitches during that time, but I thought we tried to do a little too much today, and they came back and got us. But it's a good series win against a good team."

Up next, the Bulldogs will take on Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.
