The Citadel Distinguished as Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- In the wake of a dramatic triple-overtime victory over Charlotte on Saturday, The Citadel garnered recognition as the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week, per an announcement from the organization Monday morning.
Fueled by a 137-yard, three-touchdown rushing performance from RB Gavin Garcia along with a second-half offensive spark from backup QB Nick Billoups, The Citadel (1-1, 0-1 SoCon) stunned FBS host Charlotte (0-1, 0-0 American) in a triple-overtime instant classic, edging the 49ers in a combative back-and-forth affair behind a final 43-41 final decision Saturday evening at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
Notably, the win serves as the 10th total victory for The Citadel over FBS opponents since the 1978 decision to reclassify Division I football in I-A (FBS) and I-AA (FCS), not to mention the program's first such result since Sept. 14, 2019, a 27-24 overtime upset at Georgia Tech. Additionally, the Bulldogs officially move to a perfect 2-0 against Charlotte all-time, coincidentally claiming both victories beyond regulation -- a 63-56 double-overtime slugfest on Oct. 11, 2014 plus now a 43-41 triple-overtime thriller on Sept. 5, 2026.
