Stump Mitchell joined The Citadel football coaching staff as a Senior Advisor in Spring 2026.
Previously, Mitchell served as the running backs coach at West Georgia for one season, helping the Wolves to an 8-3 overall finish. He guided a pair of backs -- Latrelle Murrell & TJ Lester -- to a combined 1,385 yards for nine touchdowns on 277 carries on the year as well.
Prior to returning to the college ranks, Mitchell coached running backs in the NFL for 10Â consecutive seasons, initially working for the Arizona Cardinals from 2013-16 before notching stints with the New York Jets (2017-18) and the Cleveland Browns (2019-23).
He also served in the same role for the Washington Redskins for two seasons from 2008-10 before securing his second head coaching role at Southern University, leading the Jaguars for three campaigns from 2010-12.
Following a 10-year NFL playing career, Mitchell began his coaching career in 1992 with the San Antonio Riders of WLAF before notching two years as a head coach at the high school level. He broke into the college coaching ranks at Morgan State -- initially served as offensive coordinator before earning the top job from 1996-98 -- before transitioning back to the NFL as the running backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks, a position he would hold for nine seasons.
Mitchell was drafted in the ninth round in 1981 by the St. Louis Cardinals, and competed for the franchise until the 1989 season before wrapping up his stint in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1990. Notably, he registered his best season during the 1995-96 campaign, logging 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground while adding 502 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
Mitchell rushed for nearly 5,000 yards in his career and scored 32 touchdowns, and currently sits second all-time for all-purpose yards in Arizona Cardinals history with 11,985 yards, trailing only Larry Fitzgerald.
A four-year starter for The Citadel at running back, Mitchell still maintains multiple records within the program's record book, earning induction into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
Overall, Mitchell remains the all-time leading rusher for the Bulldogs with 4,062 yards while also holding the single-season rushing mark behind a 1,647 performance from his junior year. He garnered third-team All-American honors as a senior while picking up Southern Conference Player of the Year and South Carolina Amateur Player of the Year accolades as a junior as well.
A native of Saint Mary’s, Ga., Mitchell graduated from The Citadel in 1981.
