CHARLESTON, S.C. - Vanessa Aponte scored in the 64th minute to cut a 2-0 deficit in half, but Western Carolina added a late insurance goal to seal a 3-1 victory over The Citadel in a Southern Conference women's soccer game on Friday atWLI Field.
The Bulldogs dropped to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Citadel hosts East Tennessee State for Senior Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Buccaneers entered their Friday night game at Mercer with a record of 11-3 and led the SoCon with nine points on the strength of a 3-1 mark.

Following a scoreless opening half, Western Carolina (6-4-4, 3-1-1) got goals from Chandler Arrowood and Caitlyln Bradham just over a minute apart to grab a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute. Aponte got the Bulldogs back in the game when she took a feed from
Ana Mesa and blasted a hard shot inside the right post.
The goal was Aponte's team-leading sixth of the season and upped her career total to 22, breaking a tie with Amy Loughran for sole possession of third place in school history. Mesa increased her career assist total to 12, second only to Aponte's 17 in The Citadel record book.
It stayed a 2-1 game until only 1:40 remained when Madison Lee put the finishing touches on the Western Carolina victory. The Catamounts finished with a 21-9 advantage in shots although both teams had eight shots on goal, including five by Aponte.
Naomi Carter added to her SoCon lead with five saves, giving her 105 on the season. Carly Tinstman had seven saves for the Catamounts.
