Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A well-balanced Wofford lineup that included five players with at least seven kills earned a season sweep of The Citadel by scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-17 in Southern Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The Terriers (12-16, 4-7 SoCon) were led on offense by Bella Santoro (nine kills) and Alex Holland (eight) as the team posted a .299 hitting percentage. Setter Molly Mayo quarterbacked the offensive unit with 31 assists. On defense, Wofford finished with 42 team digs, including a match-high 11 by Tierney Flaherty.
Dominique Williams and
Moriah Smith, who drove home five kills apiece, brought home top honors for The Citadel (7-22, 0-13 SoCon). Williams was also active on defense with three assisted blocks, sharing team-high honors with
Megan Sowell and
Lauren Hurt.
In the first set the two units endured seven ties to reach a 16-all deadlock following an unforced error by The Citadel. Wofford quickly grabbed the momentum with a 5-2 run, highlighted by three kills off the hand of Santoro to move in front 23-18. The Dogs trimmed the deficit to two, following a late kill by Hurt, but the Terriers closed the door with a kill by Taylor Baird.
Santoro again proved to be the difference in the match, driving home four kills in the first 19 Wofford points of the second frame as the Terriers moved out in front 19-11. The Citadel took advantage of five unforced Wofford errors, but it was two kills down the stretch by Alex Holland that made for the nine-point victory.
Wofford established itself early on in the set, taking a 16-8 lead following a strike by Ellie Tallman. The Citadel used a series of points by Hurt, which included a kill and a service ace, to pull within 19-13. However, Wofford closed out the victory by scoring six of the final 10 points.
The Citadel returns to McAlister Field House to take on Clarion on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
