CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel (0-1) fell 144-71 in its season-opening game at No. 22 Butler (1-0). Three Bulldogs scored in double figures as freshman
Quayson Williams notched 13 points in his first career contest.
Senior
Derrick Henry and junior
Brian White recorded 13 points and 11 points, respectively, and senior
P.J. Boutte added seven points and four assists. The Citadel saw 10 different players score and 24 of the team's 71 points came from freshmen seeing their first action in a Bulldog uniform.
"Butler is a great team and we did not execute very well," head coach
Duggar Baucom said. "We got off to a decent start and we'll get better. We have to learn from this."
After Butler jumped out to an early 15-5 lead, Coach Baucom's squad clawed back. Boutte flipped in a nifty reverse layup and Williams sunk back-to-back threes to make it 18-13 at the 14:53 mark. Butler responded with a pair of transition buckets, but The Citadel cut its deficit to four with just over 13 minutes left in the opening half following an old-fashioned three-point play converted by White.
That was the closest The Citadel would get as Butler's lead ballooned to 30 before halftime. The visiting Bulldogs scored 41 points in the first half, setting a new program record against a Top 25 opponent. Butler cushioned its lead throughout the second half and dealt The Citadel a season-opening loss. Freshmen
Matt Frierson,
Qwandell Newton and senior walk-on
Bobby Duncan all made their first career appearances in a Bulldog uniform down the stretch.
The Citadel now returns home for its season opener on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will face Stetson and the game will be the first of three Pack The Mac events in 2015-16. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. and tickets are available at PackTheMac.com.
