The Citadel Basketball: This Week's Promotions

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel men's basketball squad hosts two games in three days at McAlister Field House this week. The crucial slate of home contests begins Thursday vs. UNC-Greensboro and wraps up Saturday vs. rival VMI.

Thursday night's game brought to you by Yellow Pages will feature a pair of special presentations. Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino will be in attendance and is set to recognize Dr. Scott Buchanan during a break in the action. Buchanan, an associate professor of political science at The Citadel, was named to the inaugural All-Southern Conference Faculty Team for his scholastic achievement among students and dedicated service to his institution.

At halftime, Iamarino plans to present The Citadel football team with its Southern Conference championship trophy as Bulldog fans will get a chance to honor the special squad. The Citadel matched the best SoCon mark in program history by finishing 6-1 in league play and earned a share of the conference title for the first time since 1992. The Bulldogs capped off their stellar season by knocking off FBS opponent South Carolina and downing Coastal Carolina in the first round of the FCS Playoffs. Thursday will be the first time the football team has been publicly honored for its accomplishments since the Dogs wrapped up the 2015 campaign in December.

Saturday is Pack the Mac at McAlister Field House sponsored by TD Bank and Domino's, as head coach Duggar Baucom takes on a familiar foe in VMI. A limited $5 ticket special is available at PackTheMac.com. At halftime, the legendary 'Blitz Kids' will be recognized with a banner ceremony. The Blitz Kids led The Citadel to unprecedented success on the court from 1957-1960 when the Bulldogs went 57-38.

That group, coached by The Citadel Athletics Hall of Fame member Norm Sloam, received the George Mikan award for being the most improved team in the nation and reached the Southern Conference title game against West Virginia in 1959. Members of the Blitz Kids will be at Saturday's game to help celebrate their achievements and unfurl the banner at halftime that will hang in the rafters at McAlister.

Following the homestand, The Citadel travels to Chattanooga on Feb. 1 and Mercer on Feb. 6 before returning to McAlister on Feb. 8 to face Samford. For more information on The Citadel men's basketball, stay tuned to CitadelSports.com and follow @CitadelHoops.
