Bulldogs Drop Contest at Furman

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team fell on the road to Furman 95-75 at Timmons Arena on Thursday night. The Bulldogs dropped to 10-16 (3-10) on the season while the Paladins grabbed their seventh win in eight outings.

During the loss, The Citadel set a pair of new program records. Center Zane Najdawi recorded his 47th blocked shot of the current campaign, which is now the most by any freshman in Bulldogs history in a single season. Additionally, with 75 points on Thursday, The Citadel has racked up a program-best 2,289 total points in 2015-16. The Bulldogs have at least six more games left to pad that record.

Senior point guard P.J. Boutte collected 15 points, four rebounds and three assists to steer The Citadel. The speedster matched his career-high with three treys as the Bulldogs made more than 10 three-pointers for the 18th time this season. Freshman Connor Schroeder contributed a career-high 17 points and four rebounds off the bench and junior Warren Sledge added 11 points, three assists and three rebounds.

Leading 31-26, Furman swung the momentum late in the first half with a game-defining 11-0 run. After Sledge made a driving layup with 4:19 remaining in the opening frame, the Paladins made four of their next five shots and held The Citadel without a field goal for the rest of the half. The 11 unanswered points handed Furman a 42-26 halftime advantage.

The Paladins put their foot on the gas to open the second half and made two three-pointers on their first two possessions to push ahead by 19 points. The Citadel scrapped to keep the deficit from growing and matched Furman the rest of the way, scoring 49 second-half points to rebound from a slow start offensively.

Furman committed 19 turnovers on Thursday night as the Bulldogs won the turnover battle for the 18th time in 26 games. After a forced turnover with 4:10 left in the game, Schroeder scored one of his six buckets to cut the deficit back to 87-68, but Furman cruised to the victory in the final stretch.

The Bulldogs now take the short trip to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to take on Wofford at 7 p.m. on Saturday. For all the latest on The Citadel basketball, follow @CitadelHoops and stay tuned to CitadelSports.com.
