CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team defeated Oglethorpe and fell at Alabama on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (8-17) earned an 8-1 victory over Oglethorpe at the Downing Howell Courts in Atlanta before traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and dropping a 6-1 decision to the Crimson Tide at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The Citadel's eight wins this season are tied for the most in a season for the Bulldogs since 2008.
"Our guys continue to grow," head coach
Chuck Kriese said. "Today was a good day with the win over Oglethorpe. We had to battle through that entire match as well. There is no easy way except to take the tough road in tennis. Our guys are getting tougher and tougher each match. We host Navy on Wednesday, and that should be a good one."
The Bulldogs opened their match against Oglethorpe (5-2) by taking two of the three doubles matches.
Artemie Amari and
Matthew Henson teamed up for a 9-7 win at the No. 1 position, and
Nicholas Bradley and
Michael Anzalone won 8-4 at No. 2.
Anzalone, a freshman from Queens, New York, earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 in the singles lineup. The win was his team-leading 10th this season and third in a row. Henson, a freshman from Bristol, Tennessee, also claimed a straight-set win with a 6-4, 6-2 final at No. 3 that was his ninth win of 2016. Classmate
Roy Hobson dropped his first set in a tiebreaker but bounced back for a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 for his ninth victory of the season.
Amari won his second consecutive singles match courtesy of a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 2. Senior
Jackson Pride won 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, and Bradley finished off the singles sweep with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9) win at No. 1.
In the second match of the day, Amari stretched his winning streak to three by taking a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9) victory at No. 2 singles. Alabama (11-7) swept the doubles competition to gain an early lead and moved on to claim victories in five of the six singles matches.
"The whole trip was worth it for Artemie to get a good win at Alabama," Coach Kriese said. "He had to battle back the whole match and finally was able to get into a third-set tiebreak."
The Citadel returns home to host Navy on Wednesday at the Earle Tennis Center. The match begins at 2 p.m., and admission is free.
