The Citadel Falls At Furman

Box Score Box Score (PDF)

GREENVILLE, S.C.
– The Citadel tennis team was defeated 6-1 at Furman on Friday.

The Citadel (8-21, 0-3) dug itself an early hole by failing to lock down the doubles point and allowing Furman (7-7, 2-0) to sweep all three matches and earn the early advantage.

"I give credit to Furman for pulling out the doubles point," head coach Chuck Kriese said. "We were ahead and once again could not close. They carried the momentum into the early part of singles. We nearly reversed the momentum for the matches at the end. I'm proud that our team continues to battle every bit of the way. Good job to Furman today. It was a very fine college match."

Sophomore Artemie Amari earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles to claim his fifth win in the last seven matches. The New York, New York, native now has a team-high 11 victories in singles play this season while making each appearance in the top half of the lineup. Furman claimed the other five singles contests in straight sets for the final score.

The Citadel continues its weekend conference road trip with a match at Mercer on Saturday at Noon. The Bears have won two matches in a row, including their conference opener against Wofford.
