The Citadel Travels to SoCon Foe Wofford

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– The Citadel baseball team will hit the road for the first of four consecutive road games beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at Wofford.
 
The Bulldogs took one of three from UNCG last weekend with Thomas Byelick picking up his first victory on the mound this season behind 6.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts. Mike Deese highlighted the 7-5 win for the Bulldogs with a four-for-five effort at the plate, including two triples.
 
Friday's game will be the first in five days for The Citadel after Tuesday's midweek matchup at Winthrop was postponed for the second time this season due to rain.
 
Wofford is currently 18-17 with a 2-7 record in Southern Conference play.
 
First pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m., Saturday's game will begin at 3 p.m. and the Bulldogs will wrap up the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start. Live stats, video and audio from Russell C. King Field will be available at CitadelSports.com.
 
Notes:
• Tuesday's rainout at Winthrop marks the second time this season that the midweek matchup between the two schools has been postponed due to rain.
• With Saturday's 7-5 victory, The Citadel handed UNCG its first Southern Conference loss this season and starting pitcher Bryce Hensely's first loss as well.
• Mike Deese had a stellar day at the plate on Saturday, going four-for-five with two triples and two singles. Deese was also three-for-three when stepping to the plate with two outs and was the first Bulldog to record two triples in the same game since Brad Felder did so against St. Joseph's in 2010. The senior had three of the seven RBI for the Dogs and half of The Citadel's eight hits.
• Sophomore William Kinney gave the Dogs the lead for good in the second inning of Saturday's contest with his first home run this season over the left field wall.
• Freshman Ben Peden also had a great day at the dish on April 9, smacking his second career home run in the fourth inning and plating three runs.
• Shy Phillips extended his hit streak to four games on Saturday, going one-for-three and scoring three of the Bulldogs' seven runs.
• Thomas Byelick earned his first win this season on Saturday, throwing 6.0 effective innings, scattering seven hits and fanning six. Zach Lavery finished his 14th game this year, working 3.0 innings and allowing just one hit and striking out three. The senior had a clutch strikeout with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning and preserve the Bulldogs' two-run lead on April 9.
• Byelick and Lavery also combined to hold the NCAA batting average leaders to eight hits in the Saturday win.
• The Citadel took the second game of the three-game series against Wofford last season as JP Sears got the start and pitched 5.1 innings and scattered six hits with 8 Ks. Clay Martin was two-for-three in the win with two runs scored.
• The Terriers were picked to finish third in the conference by both the coaches and media members and enter the series with a 2-7 record in SoCon play.
• 2016 marks the 20th year of The Citadel playing along the banks of the Ashley River at Joseph P. Riley Park.
• The first game at the Joe came on April 6, 1997, against Western Carolina and the first pitch was fouled into the marsh.
• Head coach Fred Jordan is the only Citadel skipper to have ever coached at Joe Riley and has amassed a 424-238 (.642) record during his 20 seasons there.
• Including this season, The Citadel has played 662 games at the Joe.
• The largest crowd to ever take in a Citadel game was on April 16, 2014, when the Bulldogs hosted South Carolina in front of 6,500 fans. Earlier this season, 6,298 fans were in attendance for The Citadel's game against the Gamecocks on March 1.
• As a team, The Citadel scored five of its seven runs with two outs against UNCG on Saturday.
• Mike Deese finished the three-game homestand against UNCG with a hit in every game. The senior went two-for-three on Friday, four-for-five with three RBI and two triples on Saturday and plated a run on one hit in the series finale on Sunday. The Marshville, North Carolina, native leads the team with a .287 batting average, 33 hits and 53 total bases this season.
• Freshman Ben Peden also had a strong showing at the dish for the Bulldogs. The Greenville, South Carolina, native now has 10 runs and 12 hits this season after going two-for-three with two runs scored against the Spartans on Sunday.
• The Citadel pitching staff ranks third in the Southern Conference with a 5.34 ERA and is fourth in the SoCon with 269 batters struck out and 81 batters struck out looking.
• The Bulldogs have given up the second-fewest home runs in the Southern Conference (20) and have allowed the third-fewest earned runs to cross the plate this season at 171.
• The Bulldogs have recorded nine double-digit strikeout games in 2016
• The 21 combined strikeout performance by JP Sears and Kyle Smith on March 25 at VMI ranks third-best in the country in a single game this season. Sears' 19 K performance in the contest is the most in a single game in the NCAA this season.
