Cross Country Travels for SoCon Championships on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel's men's and women's cross country teams will head to Spartanburg, S.C. for the Southern Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The event is scheduled to begin with the women's 5,000-meter race at 10:00 a.m. followed by the men's 8K at 10:45 a.m. An awards ceremony to honor team and individual winners will follow the conclusion of the men's race.

Last season, the men's squad placed ninth overall and the women finished tenth.

The lady Bulldogs are led by freshman Amber Opp, who broke The Citadel's 6,000-meter record and set a personal best at the ECU-hosted Pirate Invitational on Oct. 13 with a time of 22 minutes, 48.77 seconds. The Morgantown, N.C., native has been the first Bulldog to cross the finish line at every competition this season.

Also for the women's team, senior Grace Jenkins returns to the SoCon championships after finishing second for the Bulldogs last season with a 5K personal best of 19:10.17.

Senior Jamie Cunningham leads the way for the men's squad this season with a second-place finish in the 8K at the Will Wilson Invitational on Sept. 30, and a new personal best of 26:14.72 at the Pirate Invitational.
