CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team scored four runs in the ninth inning, but narrowly fell 10-9 against Dartmouth in the series finale on Sunday at Joe Riley Park.

The Bulldogs (7-12) entered the bottom of the ninth down 10-5, but nearly rallied for a spectacular comeback. Barrett Charpia opened the ninth with a solo home run, his 5th of the season.

Joe Sabatini and Clay Martin continued the inning, each reaching on base hits. Taylor Cothran battled for a two-strike base knock to score Sabatini and, with two outs, Jonathan Sabo brought home Martin and Cothran with a double to end the scoring at 10-9.

Sabatini led the offense in a big way with two home runs, his third and fourth of the year, along with three runs scored and three RBI in a 3-for-4 ball game. Jonathan Sabo crushed his fourth home run of the season, finished 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Cothran and Charpia added two hits apiece.

The Bulldogs finished with 14 hits including seven extra base hits and four home runs. After hitting just one home run through their first 11 games, the Bulldogs have broken out with 14 in their last eight games.

Marlin Morris started his first game in a Bulldog uniform, striking out four batters over three innings. Ryan Stamler pitched two scoreless innings in relief, while Jack Henry Beasley worked one inning without allowing a run.

The Citadel grabbed its lone lead 2-1 in the second inning when Sabatini hit his first home run of the day. Dartmouth quickly answered in the third with two runs of their own and kept at least a one run advantage for the last seven innings.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, in a home-and-home series against Georgia Southern. The Citadel hosts the Eagles at 6 p.m. at Joe Riley Park on Tuesday, before traveling to Stateboro, Georgia, on Wednesday for another 6 p.m. first pitch.
