STATESBORO, Ga. – The Citadel baseball pitching staff combined to strike out a season-high 18 batters in a 1-0 loss at Georgia Southern on Wednesday night.
Zach Taglieri made his first collegiate start in just his second career appearance. The freshman right hander was dealing against the Eagles, striking out eight batters in 3.2 innings. Taglieri was on the hook for the loss, but allowed just one run on two hits.
The Citadel bullpen continued to baffle Georgia Southern hitters, allowing just one hit over 4.1 innings with 10 more strikeouts.
Jordan Buster struck out three in 1.1 innings,
Thomas Byelick cut down six hitters over 2.2 innings and
Marlin Morris struck out the lone hitter he faced in the eighth inning.
Pitching was dominant on both sides as the Bulldogs were only able to muster four hits in the game with 10 strikeouts.
Jonathan Sabo led the offense with a 2-for-4 game, while
Barrett Charpia and
Joe Sabatini added a hit apiece.
The Bulldogs' best offensive scoring opportunity came in the third inning when Sabatini led off with a walk. He later advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there.
Next up, The Citadel begins Southern Conference action against rival VMI. The Bulldogs welcome the Keydets for a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. at Joe Riley Park.
