The Citadel Heads to SoCon Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel's track and field teams head to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete in the 2017 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday.

Last season, Mady Riegel secured her first conference championship with a javelin throw of 138 feet, 5 inches that broke The Citadel's record. The junior from Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, is currently ranked No. 1 in the SoCon with her new program-record toss of 143-0 at the CSU Spring Break Invitational.

Freshman Jessy Page is No. 1 on The Citadel's all-time list and ranked fourth in the SoCon in the discus with her toss of 141-9 at the Lowcountry Invitational. Page is also third on the program's all-time list and fourth in the conference in the hammer throw with a heave of 162-5 at the CSU-Citadel Tune-Up.

Senior Caillian Colquitt is ranked sixth in the SoCon in the 10,000 meters with a time of 39 minutes, 37.95 seconds at the Duke Invitational, and senior Kaitlyn Moore is ranked ninth in the shot put with a heave of 39-2.5 at the CSU-Citadel Tune-Up.

For the men's team, sophomore Josiah Johnson took second place overall in the 100-meter dash at the 2016 championships with a time of 10:58, the fifth-fastest time in program history. This season, Johnson is ranked fifth in the SoCon in the 100 with a time of 10.71 at the CSU Spring Break Invitational.

Senior Malik Diggs finished second at last season's championships in the 110-meter hurdles with a then-personal-best time of 14.41. Diggs is currently ranked No. 2 in the SoCon in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.35 seconds, the second-best time in program history. The Laurinburg, North Carolina, native is also ranked No. 1 in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.78, the second-fastest time on The Citadel's all-time list.

Sophomore Charlie Hatler is ranked second in the SoCon in the javelin with a launch of 188-5 at the Lowcountry Invitational, and junior Griffin Miller is ranked third with a toss of 173-1 at the Tiger Orange and Blue Classic.

The Citadel has two of the SoCon's top-seven times in the 400 meters. Sophomore Clarence Richardson is ranked fifth with a time of 49.28 at the USC Open, and junior Devin Singleton is seventh with a time of 49.72 at the Bill Carson Invitational. Singleton also holds ninth place in the SoCon in the 200 with a time of 22.05 at the CSU-Citadel Tune-Up. Sophomore Jordan Williams' long jump mark of 22-9.25 from the Lowcountry Invitational is ranked fourth in the conference.

The Bulldogs also hold three of the top-eight discus throws in the SoCon. Junior Derrick Freeland is fifth with a heave of 154-1, freshman Prince Howard-Whitaker is ranked sixth with a toss of 153-11, and sophomore Ja'Lon Williams is eighth with a throw of 143-4. Freeland is ranked third in the hammer throw with a toss of 172-2, and Williams is ranked ninth with a toss of 155-1. Williams also holds a sixth-ranked toss in the shot put with a launch of 48-4.75.

The men's squad placed sixth overall at the 2016 championships with 77 total team points while the women's team finished eighth with 29 points. The meet is scheduled to begin on Thursday and conclude on Friday. Live stats will be available at CitadelSports.com along with final results at the conclusion of the meet.
