Opp Takes First Place at Will Wilson Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel's cross country teams hosted the Will Wilson Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park in Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The women's 5,000 meters took off at 9:00 a.m. and The Citadel's Amber Opp, a freshman from Morgantown, N.C., won first place with a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 53 seconds. This marks Opp's first win individually and her third consecutive race as the first Bulldog to cross the finish line. The Bulldogs also had two other cadet-athletes finish in the top-5 for the women: senior Grace Jenkins finished third overall with a time of 19:25.50, and freshman Casey Miller took fourth place with a time of 19:29.40.

The men's squad finished second on the day in the 8K with senior Jamie Cunningham leading the way. Cunningham took second place with a time of 27:13.40, with freshman Jeremy Shipley following close behind with a fifth-place finish in 27:39.30.

The Citadel's cross country teams will take a break until Oct. 13 when they travel to Greenville, N.C. to compete in the ECU-hosted Pirate Invitational.
