CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel Department of Athletics will recognize former Citadel basketball point guard and acclaimed author Pat Conroy with a ceremony at halftime of the men's basketball game against Furman on Saturday, Feb. 3.
Conroy, who passed away from pancreatic cancer on March 4, 2016, was the basketball team's Most Valuable Player during his senior season (1966-67). He is well-known for his books based in South Carolina's Lowcountry, including best-sellers
The Prince of Tides,
Beach Music and
South of Broad. He also penned
My Losing Season in 2002, which became a popular book nation-wide among athletes, coaches and sports fans.
Conroy was awarded an honorary degree from The Citadel in 2010, and was enshrined in the college's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
At halftime of the 1 p.m. game against the Paladins, a special ceremony will be held. His wife, Cassandra King-Conroy, as well as his siblings and former teammates are expected to be in attendance to honor Conroy's memory.
