Baseball Takes Series Over Towson with 4-3 Win in Finale

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team used a 4-3 win in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader to claim the series over Towson 2-1 at Joe Riley Park. The Tigers were able to even the series at 1-1 with a 6-0 win in the day's first game, but the Bulldogs bounced back with the victory in the finale.

Game 1: Towson 6, The Citadel 0
In the day's first game, Towson (10-24) started things off by scoring two unearned runs in the top of the third and then tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Tigers rounded out the game with two final runs in the ninth.

Craig Alleyne went 4-for-5 in the game and drove in three runs to lead the way for Towson. Richie Palacios went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Dirk Masters went 2-for-3 with one run scored himself.

For the Bulldogs (14-21), Jeffery Brown started the day off with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate and added to his season total with a stolen base. He now leads the team with 10 base swiped on the campaign.

Thomas Byelick (L, 0-5) pitched the first six and one-third innings for the Bulldogs and struck out five batters compared to scattering four runs, only one of which was earned, and one walk before giving way to Kyle Smith, Jack Henry Beasley and Ryan Stamler.

David Marriggi (W, 2-4) recorded his second win for Towson, pitching seven complete innings that saw him give up just three hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Game 2: The Citadel 4, Towson 3
The second game, which was a seven-inning affair, started off much differently than the first as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Ben Peden ripped a single through the right side to score Brown and William Kinney.

In the bottom of the third, Peden worked his magic again, this time with an RBI triple down the left field line that scored Ryan McCarthy, putting the 'Dogs up 3-0.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Tigers managed to close the gap with a pair of single runs, but Kinney extended the lead back out to two, 4-2 with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Brown.

Things got interesting in the top of the seventh as the first two Towson batters singled, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Jordan Buster came on to pitch and despite giving up a sacrifice fly that allowed a run to score, was able to shut the threat down, including striking the last two batters out.

Jonathan Sabo (W, 1-1) earned his first win on the year in his second collegiate start on the hill while Buster earned his second save. Sabo pitched six-plus innings and struck out four while scattering five hits and three runs and Buster added his scoreless inning that included the two strikeouts.

Michael Adams (L, 3-3) pitched the complete game for the Tigers and struck out four batters while giving up eight hits and four runs, two earned.

Peden ended the game 2-for-3 with three runs batted in while Kinney went 2-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored.

Billy Lennox was the lone Towson player to log multiple hits in the second game as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
