CHARLESTON, S.C. – Five newcomers saw the court and three freshmen made their collegiate debuts as The Citadel men's basketball team dropped their season opener, 91-76 to UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at McAlister Field House.

KEY STATS
- Kaiden Rice opened the game with the Bulldogs' first points of the season off a layup. However, that would be The Citadel's last lead of the game as UNC Asheville went on a 5-0 spurt to take the lead for good.
- With 16:14 left in the opening period, freshman Rudy Fitzgibbons, III hit a 3-pointer to knot the score at 11-all.
- After Asheville managed to stretch the lead back out, the 'Dogs closed the gap with Fletcher Abee hitting one of his team-high five treys to tie the game at 25-all with 8:56 remaining in the first half.
- Asheville once again stretched the lead back out, this time to nine after three-straight 3-pointers from Trent Stephney, DeVon Bates and Tajion Jones.
- Asheville managed to stretch the lead out to 21, 57-36 with 32 seconds left when LJ Thorpe connected on a pair of free throws, but Abee cut into the lead with a jumper just outside the paint with two seconds left.
- Hayden Brown opened the second half with a layup in the first nine seconds to cut into the lead, but Asheville continued to answer and stretch things back out.
- With 7:21 left in regulation, Brown managed to cut the lead to just 14, 77-63 with a 3-pointer, and with 35 seconds remaining, Jackson Gammons cut the deficit to 12 at 88-76.
- After shooting 46.4% (13-of-28) in the first half, the Bulldogs came back out in the second half and connected on 60.9% (14-of-23) of their field goals. For the game, The Citadel converted 52.9% of their field goals, including 60.0% (9-of-15) from long range.
- In contrast, UNC Asheville opened the game shooting 68.8% (22-of-32) from the field and ended the game hitting 56.9% (33-of-58) of their shots, including 47.8% (11-of-23) from beyond the 3-point arc.
- Abee led The Citadel with 17 points, including going 5-of-6 (.833) from beyond the arc.
- Brown ended the game with 15 points, while Tyson Batiste added 11 and six assists and Eddie Davis, III chipped in 10 points and a team-high five rebounds.
- Asheville was led by Baker's 25 points and Jones' 23.
NOTABLES
- On Saturday, the Bulldogs converted 52.9% of their field goals. The last time a Bulldog team converted at least 50.0% of their field goals was last season in the home game against UNC Greensboro (Feb. 28, 2019) where the 'Dogs converted 50.8% (33-of-65) of their field goal attempts.
- The Citadel converted 60.9% of their field goal attempts in the second half Saturday. The last time the 'Dogs converted at least 60.0% of field goals in a second period was last season at South Florida (Nov. 24, 2018) when the 'Dogs connected on 60.0% (18-of-30) from the field in the half.
- The Bulldogs converted nine 3-pointers in the season opener, extending two streaks. The Citadel has made at least five treys in 128 straight games and have converted at least one 3-pointer in 391 straight games.
- Five Bulldogs made their debuts for The Citadel, including Abee, Batiste, Davis, Fitzgibbons and Gammons.
- Abee made his first collegiate start in his collegiate debut.
- Abee's five 3-pointers are the most since Lew Stallworth converted five treys at VMI last season (March 8, 2019).
- Batiste's six assists marks the first time a Bulldog has had at least five assists since Stallworth had five last season at home against Samford (Feb. 23, 2019).
- With his six assists, Batiste has now recorded 175 career assists.

Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags).
