Inside The Numbers
332 - Eight different ball carriers combined to rush for 332 yards in the season opener. Four of the back carried the ball at least six times, with Branond Rainey (33) and Clay Harris (12) leading the way.
169 - Quarterback Brandon Rainey ran for 169 yards on 33 carries in the season opener against Towson. It was the fourth 100-yard performance of his career. He had two in his four starts at quarterback last season, and had one as a B-Back in 2017.
49.0 - Sophomore punter Matt Campbell averaged 49.0 yards on two punts in the opener. He had a long of 52 yards and both of his punts were inside the 20-yarde line.
38:11 - The Citadel controlled the ball for 38:11 against Towson. The Bulldogs held the ball for 11:47 in the second quarter after holding it for 9:56 in the first quarter. They also held the ball for 9:22 in the fourth quarter.
8 - The Bulldog defense was able to get pressure on the quarterback in the season opener as eight different players were credited with quarterback hurries.

On This Date
In 1991, the Bulldogs opened the season with an impressive 33-10 victory over Presbyterian in front of 17,660 fans inside Johnson Hagood Stadium. Cedric Sims rushed for 115 yards and Jack Douglas added 106 rushing yards in the win.

The Game
The Citadel hits the road for the first time this season as it travels to face Elon on Sept. 7. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

All games this season can be heard live on 92.1-FM/102.1-FM/1450-AM in the Charleston. The new voice of the Bulldogs, Luke Mauro, will be joined by Ted Byrne in the booth.

The early forecast is calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s at kickoff.


Hurricane Evacuation
Due to the threat of Hurricane Dorian, the Bulldogs left campus Monday afternoon to prepare for the game in a safe location. The team travel to its team hotel in Greensboro on Friday.


vs. Elon
The Bulldogs and Phoenix have met 13 times prior with The Citadel holding an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series. The Bulldogs have won each of the last two meetings.


Two Straight Against CAA
Saturday's contest will mark the second-straight game against a team from the Colonial Athletic Association.


Old SoCon Foes
The Bulldogs and Phoenix are no strangers on the gridiron as the two faced off when both were members of the Southern Conference. The teams met 11 times as conference foes with the Bulldogs holding a 6-5 advantage.


100-Yard Rusher in Season Opener
The Bulldogs continued their streak of having a 100-yard rusher in the season opener as Brandon Rainey ran for 169 yards against Towson. The Citadel has had a 100-yard rusher in the season opener every year dating back to 2014.

Long Drives
The Bulldogs' offense put together three drives in the season opener of at least 15 plays. The Citadel put together drives of 16, 19 and 18 plays against Towson. The drives resulted in a pair of touchdowns and a missed field goal.


Possessing The Ball
Ball control is the name of the game and The Citadel did just that in the opener. The Bulldogs possessed the ball for 38:11 against Towson. The Citadel kept the ball for 9:56 in the first quarter and 11:47 in the second quarter.


Fourth-Down Conversions
The Bulldogs took advantage of short yardage situations and went 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions against Towson. All three conversions came on 4th-and-1.


True Freshman in Opener
The Bulldogs played six true freshmen in the season opener, all on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive backs Andy Davis and Jay Girdner, linebackers Logan Braucht, Anthony Britton and Hasan Black, and defensive lineman Dewey Greene IV all saw action in the season opener.


Davis Gets Start in 1st Career Game
True freshman Andy Davis got the start at safety in his first collegiate game. He finished with a solo tackle. Davis also played a key role on special teams.


Nwanze Finds the End Zone for 1st Time
Redshirt freshman Emeka Nwanze found the end zone for the first time in his career when he scored from a yard out in the second quarter. He finished the game with 22 yards on nine carries.


Matt "The Leg" Campbell
Matt Campbell picked up where he left off as a freshman as he averaged 49.0 yards on two punts. He kicked a long of 52 yards and had both punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

The Bulldogs play their second-straight game on the road as they travel to face Georgia Tech on Sept. 14. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
