Rarely does a college football program know in advance exactly how many fans will be in their stadium for a home game.
But for The Citadel's home contest against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, the number will be 3,081.
The 11,500-seat Johnson Hagood Stadium will be hosting a restricted number of fans due to the coronavirus pandemic. Everyone in attendance will be required to follow local health protocols.
In what will be the first home game for the Bulldogs in over 10 months, the process by which The Citadel secured their opponent was somewhat tedious, according to Citadel head coach Brent Thompson.
"We had two or three different options," said Thompson. "We ended up with EKU because they were a little bit closer to us than some of the rest."
With The Citadel having already played two away games this season--losses against South Florida and Clemson--the importance of securing a home game was paramount for both the fans and the senior football players.
"The game will be an opportunity for our seniors to enjoy ring weekend." said Thompson, referring to the annual ring presentation ceremony scheduled for this weekend. "Especially for those [players] graduating in December, the game could be their last home game."
With the anticipation of ring weekend and in-person football rising, the protection of all players and fans against COVID-19 will still be a top priority, according to Citadel athletic director Mike Capaccio.
"We are going to be very, very cautious with this whole thing," said Capaccio, who mentioned that fans will be masked and seated in socially distanced "pods." "We are going to take the protocols set out by the state and City of Charleston very seriously."
The Corps of Cadets attendance will be limited to 500. The game will be televised on ESPN3 at 1pm.
