Bulldogs Come Up Just Short Against No. 12 Pitt

CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the second straight game The Citadel women's soccer team gave No. 12 Pitt all it could handle as the Bulldogs held the Panthers scoreless for over 87 minutes of action, but the nationally-ranked Panthers were able to escape Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field with a 1-0 victory Sunday morning.

SCORING SUMMARY
88' – Amanda West took a pass from Anna Bout and broke away for the score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was a very physical battle for the entire 90 minutes, and it started from the opening whistle as both teams tried to push forward.
  • Pitt got the first corner kick of the game in the fifth minute, but it didn't result in much of anything.
  • Pitt's Athalie Palomo took the first shot of the game in the eighth minute, and the Panthers took a 4-1 advantage in shots into the halftime intermission.
  • In the 36th minute, graduate transfer Rachel Posner took the Bulldogs' first corner kick, with the ball eventually finding the boot of fellow grad transfer Megan McLaughlin, but McLaughlin's shot was just off the mark.
  • The second half opened with Pitt going heavy on the offensive as the Panthers recorded four shots in the first 10 minutes of action, but only one required freshman Jess Newton to make a save as two went wide and another was blocked.
  • The Bulldogs had several good buildups of their own in the middle portion of the second half, including one where sophomore Suzuka Yosue and freshman Zoey Conrad appeared to be on their way to a repeat performance from Thursday, but the Pitt defense was able to turn the attack away.
  • Sophomore Ani Ford and senior Ellie Burgess each took a shot in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
  • Pitt broke through with just under three minutes left in regulation to avoid the upset.
  • At the final horn, Pitt held a 12-3 advantage in shots, including 2-0 on goal.
  • Pitt took 11 corner kicks compared to just two by the Bulldogs.
