CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel will play its fourth straight match away from home to start the 2021 campaign, heading to Atlanta to battle ACC foe Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Last weekend, the Bulldogs split a pair of matches in Sumter, S.C., knocking off Methodist, 6-3, before falling to Georgia Southern, 7-0. Trailing 2-1 against Methodist after the non-traditional doubles play, The Citadel staged a rally in singles action, taking five of the six matches to claim its first win of the season.
Josiah Schainblatt and
Hayden Shoemake earned straight-sets wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, and The Citadel claimed the bottom three singles positions each in three sets off the rackets of
Lucas Robins,
Sebastian Kamieniecki and
Andrew Darby. Shoemake and Kamieniecki also paired to win the Bulldogs' doubles point at No. 2.
Georgia Tech enters Sunday's match with a 4-2 record, including a 3-1 mark at the Byers Tennis Complex. The Yellow Jackets' only losses came against a pair of ranked opponents as they fell 4-2 to then-No. 12 Georgia and 4-1 against then-No. 21 South Carolina to open the month of February. In their last time out, the Yellow Jackets swept crosstown rival Georgia State, 7-0, on Friday.
The Yellow Jackets have a pair of ranked doubles tandems: Marcus McDaniel and Pablo Schelcher are ranked No. 31 in the nation and have played three of the five matches at No. 1 doubles, and the team of Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin are No. 41 in the nation and have played primarily at No. 2.
In singles play, Martin ranks No. 59 in the latest ITA rankings and is 2-1 at No. 1 and 2-0 at No. 2 singles this spring.
The Citadel will wrap up its road stretch next Friday evening with another bout against an ACC opponent, squaring off against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 6 p.m.
