CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team will remain in South Carolina this weekend, making the two-hour trek to Sumter to compete in the USC Sumter Classic with matches against the host and Southern Wesleyan on Saturday and Sunday.
Last weekend, the Bulldogs kicked off their 2021 spring slate at Clemson, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Tigers.
Lucas Robins and
Andrew Darby nearly claimed their doubles match at No. 3, taking four games off their opponents before falling as Clemson took the doubles point.
Hayden Shoemake won the most games in singles on the afternoon for The Citadel, winning eight games in a 6-4, 6-4 setback against Clemson's Ryuhei Azuma.
Sebastian Kamieniecki claimed the lone set of singles play for the Bulldogs, winning the first set against Spencer Whitaker in a 6-3, 0-6, 1-6 match.
USC Sumter and Southern Wesleyan will be opening their seasons with the event, hosted at the Palmetto Tennis Center. The Fire Ants posted a 5-8 record in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, and the Warriors were 4-3 overall when the season was halted in early March.
Following this weekend's action, The Citadel will head to the Volunteer State to battle Tennessee next Saturday. The Volunteers have jumped out to a perfect 7-0 start this spring and are ranked No. 10 nationally in the latest ITA rankings released by the organization on Feb. 3.
