CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel will step back out of Southern Conference play on Wednesday afternoon, welcoming rival College of Charleston to the Earle Tennis Center at 3 p.m. to kick off a three-match week for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (4-12) will be competing for the first time since March 20, when The Citadel dropped a 6-1 decision against Furman.
Hayden Shoemake shined for the Bulldogs in that matchup, picking up a win at No. 2 doubles while partnering with
Will Graham before claiming a win at No. 2 singles, defeating Jake Banghdia in a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set after rallying from a set down.
Wednesday's battle is the third of seven straight matches at home for The Citadel, which will be seeking its first victory since an 8-1 triumph over USC Sumter on Feb. 28.
College of Charleston is 5-4 overall but has dropped three of its last four matches, falling against North Carolina Central, Davidson and Coastal Carolina before sweeping Methodist in its last time out on March 27.
The Citadel and College of Charleston will be meeting for the 86th time on Wednesday, with the Cougars holding a 57-28 edge in the all-time series. The Bulldogs will look to knock off the Cougars for the first time since a 4-3 victory on April 2, 2008, and a win would snap College of Charleston's current 10-match streak.
Following Wednesday's match, The Citadel will continue its long homestand with a Saturday doubleheader, taking on Eastern Florida State at 9:30 a.m. and USC Sumter at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are undefeated in program history against both opponents, with a 1-0 edge over Eastern Florida State and a perfect 15-0 mark against USC Sumter, including the aforementioned 8-1 win earlier this season.
