The Citadel Falls on the Road at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Citadel women's soccer team dropped a Southern Conference matchup Thursday evening, falling 5–0 to Samford at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

The Citadel (4-5-2, 1-2-1 SoCon) was under pressure early as Samford capitalized on a pair of goals in the opening seven minutes. The hosts struck in the 6th minute off a corner kick and converted a penalty less than 30 seconds later to build quick momentum. Two more first-half tallies, including one in the 37th minute, sent The Citadel into the break trailing 4–0.

Goalkeeper Zoe Santos recorded six saves in 84 minutes of action before Sarah Wethington closed the match in net. Offensively, The Citadel registered five shots, with Adrienne Trerotola, Adrianna Gill, and Alice Williamson each creating opportunities on target.

Samford (6-2-4, 3-0-1 SoCon) added its final goal in the 59th minute to secure the result.

Coach Ciaran Traquair reflected on the match afterward:

"Coming to Samford is always difficult. You have to be almost perfect on the day to get a result and we were probably just a little short with it being game three of a road stretch. A bad start put us in a really difficult position but the girls battled to hang in there second half. It's three points gone but we have another opportunity to get some more on the board this weekend. Onto the next match. We will hopefully rise to the challenge at home on Sunday."

The Citadel returns home on Sunday, Oct. 5, hosting Western Carolina at Washington Light Infantry Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
