Bulldogs Fall in Extra Innings 9-8; Elliott Records Four Hits

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. –The Citadel lost in extra innings on a close play at the plate, falling 9-8 to the Samford Bulldogs in the series opener on Friday night. Travis Elliott went 4-for-4 at the plate.

How It Happened
  • Samford scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning from a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
  • A bases-loaded hit by pitch plated a run in the bottom of the second for Samford, giving them the 3-0 lead.
  • The Bulldogs scored their first run of the game in the third inning with an RBI double from Travis Elliott, bringing Phillips Daniels home from second base.
  • Lane Tobin brought the lead down to 3-2 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.  
  • The Citadel took advantage of a fielding error committed by Samford to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning.
  • TJ Anderson put the Bulldogs ahead 4-3 in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly RBI, scoring Tobin.
  • The Citadel gained a two-run advantage off a fielding error committed by Samford to make it 5-3.
  • Samford scores three in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain the lead at 6-5.
  • Phillips Daniels tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Aryan Patel.
  • The Citadel scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning on a throwing error from Samford to make it 8-6.
  • Samford scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to tie the game at 8-8. Michael Gupton recorded the game-winning RBI with a close play at the plate, securing the victory with a final score of 9-8.
