Late Rally Leads Bulldogs to 9-7 Victory Over Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Citadel scored five runs in the eighth inning, propelling the Bulldogs to a 9-7 victory over Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • Western Carolina scored the game's first run off a solo home run from Hayden Friese in the first inning.
  • Garrett Dill put The Citadel on the board in the second inning after stealing third, which led to a throwing error by Western Carolina that tied the game at 1-1.  
  • The Catamounts jumped to a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning over the Bulldogs with an RBI single from Trent Turner and a two-run RBI single from Mason Holton.
  • A squeeze bunt by Phillips Daniels and clever baserunning from Lane Tobin and Garrett Dill allowed The Citadel to narrow the gap against Western Carolina, bringing the score to 4-3.
  • Western Carolina established a four-run lead at 7-3 in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single from Trey Spees, a wild pitch, and another RBI single from Friese.
  • Anthony Hausner doubled down the left field line, scoring Travis Elliott from first and making it a 7-4 game in the seventh inning.
  • The Bulldogs rallied in the eighth inning, scoring five runs on three hits. TJ Anderson drove in three on an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Phillips Daniels, Aryan Patel, and Matthew Lively to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Travis Elliott gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 8-7 with an RBI single through the right side.
