SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel graduate student
Will Holmes earned recognition as the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, per announcement from the league office Monday afternoon.
"Whenever you're recognized like this, it reflects the work your teammates put in behind you. I just trusted my stuff, attacked the zone, and let the defense make plays," said
Will Holmes. "It's an honor to represent our program and bring home Pitcher of the Week."
For Holmes, the accolade serves as his first such honor on the year, joining teammate
Bryce Coulter (March 2) as the lone winners of SoCon Pitcher of the Week for the 2026 campaign.
A native of Boiling Springs, S.C., Holmes pitched 7.0 scoreless innings against VMI in the opener of a three-game sweep for The Citadel, allowing three hits, zero runs and one walk while sitting down 10 batters on strikes. Notably, the southpaw enters the upcoming Southern Conference Baseball Championship boasting a career-high 99 strikeouts, just one short of joining the 100-strikeout club, a 13-member crew with the most recent additions coming courtesy of San Diego Padres pitcher JP Sears (142 in 2017) and current Citadel pitching coach
James Reeves (115 in 2015).
"Will was incredible this week. He did what he needed to do. He had three pitches in the zone for strikes, and he had pitches he could take out of the zone for swinging strikes," said pitching coach
James Reeves. "It was a dominant outing against a solid offensive club that we have a lot of respect for, so it was good to see all his hard work paying off."
