CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Citadel soccer initiates the celebration of the team's 25th anniversary during the 2026 season with the unveiling of a commemorative logo honoring the players, coaches and moments that have shaped the Bulldogs since the program began competition in 2001.

The anniversary crest combines multiple elements of The Citadel's institutional history with the identity the soccer program has built during its first quarter-century.
 
"The Citadel Soccer" is displayed across the top of the shield above an architectural silhouette that draws from the castellated design tradition associated with numerous buildings on campus at The Citadel. The center of the crest features the institution's C-Star logo, flanked by 2001 and 2026 to represent the program's inaugural season and 25th anniversary year.

A white banner displaying "25th Anniversary" completes the design, which incorporates The Citadel's traditional Flag Blue, Infantry Blue and white color palette.

The architectural element connects the soccer program to a design history that predates the program by nearly two centuries. Prominent Charleston architect Frederick Wesner designed the original building that became known as the Citadel. The structure was erected in 1829 and featured a two-story Romanesque design with an interior courtyard, Doric columns and Roman arches.

The fort-like architecture helped create an institutional identity that remains recognizable throughout The Citadel's branding and campus environment. That architectural legacy is represented across the top of the anniversary crest, connecting the program's modern identity to the history and traditions of the institution it represents.

The shield-shaped design also gives the logo a distinctive crest that can stand on its own while maintaining recognizable Citadel elements. The C-Star anchors the center of the mark, while the dates and anniversary banner immediately identify the milestone being celebrated.

The crest represents the generations of Bulldogs who established the program, built its traditions and created the foundation for the current team.

"As we celebrate 25 years of Citadel soccer, our focus remains exactly the same," head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "I am honored to have served here for 10 of those years and to have had the privilege of working with exceptional support staff and players throughout that time. There have been so many people who have helped move this program forward, and this anniversary gives us an opportunity to recognize the players and staff who came before us and helped build the foundation we have today. It is special to be part of that history, while also having the responsibility to continue building on it for the next generation of Bulldogs."


Building the Program

The Citadel began competition in 2001 under head coach Megan Hjerling, who led the Bulldogs during the program's first four seasons.

The Bulldogs earned the first victory in program history in their inaugural match, defeating Columbia (S.C.) 4-0 on Aug. 29, 2001.

The initial season also produced one of the longest-standing records in program history as Kelly Pesterfield scored 17 goals and recorded 34 points, both of which remain single-season records.

Hjerling led the program from 2001-04 before Chris Lenzo took over as head coach during the 2005 season. Bob Winch moved into the position a year later in 2006 and guided the Bulldogs for the next 10 seasons.

During Winch's first season, Rachelle Ornelas became the program's first All-Southern Conference selection. Ornelas earned second-team honors after recording seven goals and one assist during her freshman campaign.
 
The Bulldogs began making significant progress under Winch, who was named SoCon Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010. The 2010 team completed the most successful season in program history, finishing 12-8-1 and setting the program record for victories. The Bulldogs went 7-4 in conference play and placed third in the SoCon standings, good for the highest conference finish in program history.

Washington Light Infantry Field has served as the primary home of Citadel soccer since the program's first full season, but the Bulldogs have also taken the field on one of The Citadel's most recognizable landmarks. The program has played 13 matches on Summerall Field, including a 3-0 victory over Georgia Southern in 2020. The Citadel most recently returned to the Parade Deck in 2024, battling UNCG to a scoreless draw.
   
A Hall of Fame Legacy

The 2010 season also marked the beginning of one of the most decorated individual careers in Citadel athletics history.

Mariana Garcia became the first player in program history to earn Southern Conference Player of the Year honors. She was also named SoCon Freshman of the Year, becoming just the second player in league history at the time to earn both awards during the same season.
 
Garcia scored 10 goals during her freshman campaign before adding seven in 2011, 14 in 2012 and six in 2013. She started all 65 matches she played in and completed her career with 37 goals, five assists, 79 points and 14 game-winning goals.

She remains the program's career leader in goals and game-winning goals. Her 14-goal season in 2012 ranks second in program history, while her six game-winning goals in 2010 remain a single-season record.

Garcia earned three All-SoCon selections, including first-team recognition in 2010 and 2012. She was also named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region second team and the Soccer America Freshman second team following her first season.

On Sept. 20, 2019, Garcia became the first player from the soccer program inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame.


Bulldogs in the Record Book

Several Bulldogs have followed Garcia by establishing records and earning recognition at the conference level.

Suzuka Yosue completed her career as the program's leader with 35 assists and 87 points. She scored 26 goals during her four seasons and recorded a program-record 11 assists in both 2021 and 2022.
 
Yosue earned second-team All-SoCon honors in 2019 before receiving first-team recognition in three consecutive seasons from 2020-22. She was also named SoCon Player of the Month twice and earned multiple conference player of the week awards.

Vanessa Aponte finished her career with 27 goals, 19 assists and 73 points. She remains the program's career leader with 269 shots and 123 shots on goal.
 
Logan Dix scored 25 goals from 2017-20, including 10 during her final season, while Amy Loughran finished her career with 21 goals and 49 points. Lauren Merchant registered 18 goals and 45 points from 2002-05, becoming one of the program's first consistent offensive leaders.

Maria Contreras established program records with 90 matches played and 81 starts from 2017-21.
 
Goalkeeper Britni Bunnell holds the career record with 358 saves, while Whitney Nave remains the program's leader in goalkeeper appearances, starts and minutes played.
 
The program's history also includes significant accomplishments away from the field.

Debbie White became the program's first four-time SoCon Honor Roll selection. She also earned two SoCon Academic All-Conference honors and received the SoCon Commissioner's Medal.

Shanna Couch became the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree in 2010. Couch was also a four-time SoCon Honor Roll selection, a three-time SoCon Academic All-Conference honoree and a three-time recipient of the conference's Commissioner's Medal.

Montana Hinson represented the program beyond the collegiate level after overcoming an ACL injury to earn a place on the United States Women's Armed Forces Soccer Team. Hinson appeared in 76 matches for the Bulldogs from 2013-16 before joining the United States Air Force.
 

The Traquair Era

Ciaran Traquair became the fourth head coach in program history in 2016 and enters his 11th season leading the Bulldogs in 2026.

Under Traquair, The Citadel won nine matches in 2018 before recording consecutive 10-win seasons in 2021 and 2022.
 
The 2021 Bulldogs produced one of the strongest seasons in program history. The Citadel set program records with 43 goals and 120 points while allowing only 22 goals, the fewest surrendered in a season. The Bulldogs also established a program-best 1.13 goals-against average.

The following season, The Citadel set records with 41 assists, 106 corner kicks and seven shutouts. The Bulldogs also earned their 100th program victory in 2021 with an 8-0 win on the road at Johnson and recorded win No. 125 with a 2-1 victory over Chattanooga in 2025.

The program continued adding conference recognition during the Traquair era. Yosue earned three consecutive first-team All-SoCon selections while 13 Bulldogs have earned SoCon All-Freshman team honors throughout program history. Gabi Macer became the program's most recent selection to the latter in 2025.

The Bulldogs also created one of the program's most distinctive moments during the 2024 season when they faced UNCG on the Parade Deck. The Citadel played the Spartans to a scoreless draw in the 453rd match in program history.


Celebrating the Past, Building the Future

From the inaugural team in 2001 to the current Bulldogs, each player and coach has contributed to the history represented by the anniversary crest.

The logo recognizes the records, awards and victories accumulated during the program's first 25 years. Additionally, the shield also represents the relationships created through Citadel soccer and the responsibility carried by each new generation of Bulldogs on pitch.

Throughout the 2026 season, The Citadel will continue celebrating the former players, coaches and memorable moments that have shaped the program.

As the Bulldogs recognize the program's first quarter-century of action, the anniversary also marks the beginning of its next chapter.

"We want to compete at a high level on the field, push for academic success and represent this institution with class," Traquair continued. "Representing The Citadel is a unique privilege that we do not take lightly. Our goal is to continue setting the bar high for the recruits still to come while developing young women who will carry that same drive into the working world after graduation."
