SAVANNAH, Ga. –
Ise d'Angelo drove home a match-high nine kills and
Bailey Kernodle added seven as The Citadel volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak and completed its season sweep of Savannah State by scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-23.
D'Angelo (.421 hitting percentage) and Kernodle (.312) combined for 16 of the Bulldogs' 31 total kills on the evening. The Citadel (7-20) offense limited itself to 12 errors in 83 attempts to close with a .229 hitting percentage. On defense the Cadets finished with 27 digs, including six from Kernodle, and six assisted blocks, two each from the combination of
Mallory Moore and
Dominique Williams.
Savannah State's offensive attack was led by Justice Dilworth (eight kills) and Caitlynn Masoe (five). The Tigers (4-23) struggled to find consistency throughout the match, limited by 27 errors in 89 attacks (.034 attack percentage). The Tigers' defensive attack managed 30 digs, including a match-high eight from Alexis Washington.
The two teams battled through nine ties and seven lead changes, with neither able to hold more than a four-point advantage, before reaching a dramatic 22-all deadlock on a kill by d'Angelo. The Bulldogs then used the heroics of
Megan Sowell, who drove home two kills and notched a service ace, as they completed the two-point opening set victory.
Rachel Keefer's service game kick started the offense early as The Citadel took an eventual 17-10 lead just over midway through the second set. The Dogs stretched their lead to nine, 21-12, following a series of kills by Kernodle, d'Angelo and
Lauren Hurt, forcing Savannah State to spend their second timeout. The Citadel allowed just two points over the remainder of the game as it completed the 11-point win.
The third set was similar to the first as the units combined for seven ties and three lead changes before knotting the game at 18-all. Two kills by Kernodle and a pair unforced errors gave The Citadel a four-point cushion, but Savannah State rallied to pull within one, 24-23, late in the set. The Dogs staved off the attempted rally and completed their third win of the season over the Tigers on a kill by Kernodle.
The Citadel continues its series of road matches this weekend when it heads to Southern Conference rivals Mercer (Oct. 31) and Wofford (Nov. 1).
