CHARLESTON, S.C. – The duo of Lauren Betlach (12 kills) and Jessica Brezwyn (11) led Southern Conference foe UNCG to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-19 victory over The Citadel in the regular season finale at McAlister Field House on Saturday evening.
Betlach and Brezwyn were joined offensively by the trio of Kelsey Sidney, Julia Westerbur and Vicky Harley, who recorded nine kills apiece, as UNCG closed out the match with 52 team kills. The Spartans' (19-10, 11-5 SoCon) offense was in full stride, posting a .298 hitting percentage, due in large part to 42 assists by Sara Hohman.
Meanwhile, The Citadel (8-25, 0-16 SoCon) was led individually by the tandem of seniors
Ise d'Angelo (eight kills) and
Lauren Hurt (eight). The Bulldogs also got a lift defensively from
Samantha Espy (11 digs) and Hurt, who closed with one solo and one assisted block in the contest.
The tightly contested opening set witnessed 10 ties in the first 28 points as the two teams reached a 14-all tie on a kill by Westerbur. UNCG ran off five of the next six points, forcing The Citadel to burn its second timeout of the set. Four kills down the stretch by Brezwyn proved to be the difference for the Spartans who completed the four-point win.
The two teams battled to nine ties in the first 32 points, including a strike by Hurt that knotted the game at 16-16. UNCG used two kills by Harley and a strike by Betlach to gain a three-point cushion, 21-18, before a kill by
Megan Sowell helped the Dogs pull within one. Despite the late rally the Spartans closed out the victory with four kills in the final five points.
Sensing the opportunity to close out the match UNCG streaked out to an 11-6 lead behind two kills from Harley, forcing the Cadets to spend their first timeout. Despite a kill by Hurt and unforced UNCG errors, the Spartans extended their lead to seven, 22-15. A Betlach service ace coupled with a kill by Brezwyn proved to be the difference as UNCG completed the sweep.
The Citadel now heads to the Southern Conference Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., next week with the pairings announced on Monday.
