GREENVILLE, S.C. – Andrea Fisher finished with a double-double that included 17 kills, 10 digs and a .367 hitting percentage to help Furman complete its season sweep of The Citadel on Friday evening by scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-15 in Southern Conference volleyball action at Alley Gym.Â
The Paladins (18-6, 11-2 SoCon), who tallied 46 kills and a .357 attack percentage, controlled the tempo throughout. Along with Fisher, Furman also got solid performances from Ashton Gregory (eight kills, .438 hitting percentage) and Tiana Joseph (six kills). Meanwhile, the defensive duo of Fisher and Meg DeMaar, who also tallied 10 digs, held The Citadel's offense in check.
The Bulldogs (8-23, 0-14 SoCon) were led offensively by the combination of
Moriah Smith (nine kills) and
Lauren Hurt (seven kills, .462 hitting percentage).
Samantha Espy, who posted double-digit digs for the fifth time in the last six matches, was the top defensive contributor 10 digs.
Knotted at eight-all early in the first set, following an unforced error by Gregory, Furman went on a 14-8 run, highlighted by three kills and a service ace from Fisher, to forge in front 22-16. The Bulldogs made a brief rally, trimming the deficit to 24-21 on a series of kills by
Megan Sowell,
Dominique Williams and
Moriah Smith, before a strike by Gregory made for the victory.
Furman took control of the second set early and never looked back. The Paladins converted 10 kills inside their first 16 points, six coming off the hand of Fisher, to assume nine-point advantage. The Citadel cracked double figures on a swing by Sowell, but it was five strikes down the stretch that powered Furman to victory.
The third set of the match was similar to the second as Furman streaked out to the early 18-9 lead behind 10 team kills and five unforced Citadel errors. The Paladins offensive attack was clicking on all cylinders, using five kills by Fisher to double the advantage. The Citadel answered with kills from
Moriah Smith,
Logan Smith and Hurt, but it was not enough to turn back the Paladins who improved to 7-1 at home this season with the win.
The Citadel completes the 2014 regular season next weekend when it hosts East Tennessee State (Oct. 14) and UNCG (Oct. 15).
The meeting with the Buccaneers on Friday evening will serve as Senior Night where fans will have the opportunity to pay homage to
Amanda Rudnik,
Mallory Moore,
Lauren Hurt and
Ise d'Angelo for their contributions to the Bulldog volleyball program over the last four years.
