CHARLESTON, S.C. – Wofford's tandem of Danni Densford and Taylor Baird, who recorded 13 kills each, led the Terriers to a 25-21, 25-10, 25-16 win over The Citadel in Southern Conference action at McAlister Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Wofford (7-9, 1-0 SoCon) drove home 49 total kills, while committing only nine errors, to finish with a .367 attack percentage in the contest. Densford and Baird were responsible for 26 strikes, while Alex Holland added eight kills. The Terriers' defense was also sound with a 46-41 edge in digs, led by Jessica Graham's 25, and a 14-0 advantage in assisted blocks behind six from Densford.
Â
The Citadel (5-11, 0-2) combined for 38 kills, led by
Moriah Smith (nine) and
Bailey Kernodle (eight).
Amanda Rudnik continued to shine on defense for the Dogs with 11 digs.
Â
The Bulldogs started quickly in the first, establishing a 15-10 lead following a series of kills by
Mallory Moore,
Lauren Hurt,
Moriah Smith and Kernodle. However, a 7-2 run by Wofford knotted the match at 17-all and forced The Citadel to spend its first timeout. The Terriers offense was unphased by the brief delay and managed to convert six kills in the final eight points, including three by Densford, to complete the opening set victory.
Â
Wofford used consecutive kills by Densford and teammate Tierney Flaherty to break 12-all tie midway through the second set. The powerful drives of the duo sparked a 10-5 run by the Terriers, who forced The Citadel to burn its second timeout after falling behind 22-17. Wofford split the final six points of the set to take a 2-0 advantage with the five-point win.
Â
The service game of Ellie Tallman, who forced the Bulldogs into three errors, proved to be the difference in the third set as Wofford assumed an early 14-8 lead. The Bulldogs made a brief rally, following kills by Kernodle,
Rachel Keefer and
Carla Bruce, pulling within three, but it was seven Terrier kills in the final 10 points that proved to be the difference in the victory.
Â
The Citadel continues against Southern Conference foes next week when it heads to Chattanooga (Oct. 3) and follows with Samford (Oct. 4).
