CHARLESTON, S.C. – Demetrius Nelson pumped in 18 points – eight of which came on second half monster dunks – and led the Alumni past a team from the Corps of Cadets, 68-29, in the 12th Annual Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday afternoon in McAlister Field House.
Nelson, of John's Island and a member of the Class of 2008, scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the second stanza as the Alumni remain unbeaten in the annual contest. The Alumni were guided by Hall of Famer and former head basketball coach Les Robinson.
Joining Nelson in double-figures scoring was Daniel Eykin '11 with 11 points and 10 points each by Cliff Washburn '02 and Tripp Grooms '13. Also scoring was Matt Williamson '92 with eight points while Terry Campbell '94 had four points and Billy McQueeney '99 recorded three. Bob Kiggans '65 and Greg Weber '74 completed the scoring with two points each.
The team from the Corps of Cadets was led by C.J. Thomas of Tango Company, who had eight points. Tyler Renew of Sierra Company and Logan Schmitt of Mike Company contributed five points each while Justice Sanders of Hotel Company added four points. Oscar Company's Andrew Furmanchik had three points as did Shon Belton of Delta Company. Rudder Brown of Oscar Company – who served as the team's coach – chipped in a pair.
The score at halftime was 42-17.
