CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel head basketball coach
Duggar Baucom announced on Thursday the additions of Qwandell Newton, Derrick Henry and Cager Hicks for the 2015-16 season.
"Derrick, Qwandell and Cager all have the ability to impact our program immediately," said Baucom of the additions. "Each brings a unique skill set that will complement their fellow teammates."
Newton, a 6-6, 195-pound swingman, signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Bulldogs after graduating from First Baptist Academy in Naples, Florida. He capped off his senior season by averaging 12.1 points, 7.3 rebound and 2.5 assists while hitting 40 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent at the charity stripe.
A gritty defender, Newton was named the Lions' Defensive Player of the Year as he averaged 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals over the course of the season. His all-around play earned him first-team all-county honors and a spot on the Southwest Florida All-Star first team.
Newton earned five varsity letters under head coach Scott Stewart and came into his own in his junior campaign where he averaged 8.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks. He was named Best Defensive Player in the Area and was a vital part of the Lions reaching the regional semifinals of the Florida High School Athletic Association tournament in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
"Qwandell brings us great versatility," said Baucom. "He can play three different positions and creates match-up problems at each of them. Qwan is a very good 3-point shooter and his length can be very disruptive on the defensive end."
Henry, a native of Covington, Georgia, joins the Bulldogs after completing his bachelor's degree in business finance and a minor in finance at Winthrop in May. The 6-3, 190-pound guard adds experience and depth to The Citadel backcourt after averaging 6.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists in three seasons with the Eagles.
Henry, who topped the double-figure plateau on 21 occasions over the course of his Winthrop career, enjoyed his best statistical season in 2012-13 when he averaged 11.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. That season he eclipsed the 20-point plateau twice including a career-high 26 in the season opener against St. Andrews.
The fifth-year senior, who will be pursuing his MBA at The Citadel, was an integral part of the 2012-13 and 2014-15 Winthrop squads that reached the Big South Tournament championship game.
"Derrick is an awesome addition to our young team," added Baucom. "He has been in a very successful program for the last four years and will give us great leadership on and off the court. Having coached against Derrick for several years I know first-hand what a fierce competitor he is and what kind of intangibles he brings to our program."
Hicks, a 6-6, 180-pound swingman, will attend The Citadel after a three-year varsity career at Cave Springs High School in Salem, Virginia. He capped off his senior year by earning all-conference and first-team all-region honors. Hicks ended the season with 340 points and moved into the top five in program history in career assists.
As a junior the multi-dimensional Hicks proved valuable by leading the team in assists and points (240) while earning second-team all-conference recognition and the title of the team's Best Defender. That came on the heels of a sophomore campaign where he was named honorable mention all-conference after scoring 140 points and handing out the most assists for the Knights.
"We are excited to have Cager join our Bulldog basketball family," said Baucom. "He is a big guard who can play the point or off the ball. Cager is a natural leader and, as the son of a very successful coach, been around the game his entire life."
The trio of Newton, Henry and Hicks are among 10 new additions to 2015-16 Citadel roster including early signees Matt Frierson, Trevor Jain and Zane Najdawi. Baucom's roster will also include the addition of Quayson Williams, Connor Schroeder, Tommy Olds and Bobby Duncan.
