CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coming off of its first Southern Conference victory since 2011, The Citadel volleyball team will have quick turnaround as they travel to face Mercer on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Macon, Georgia.

The Bulldogs previously met up with Mercer to start their SoCon schedule, falling in four sets to the Bears in McAlister Field House on Sept. 23.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs had a strong performance after falling in the first two sets by just two points each. In the opening set, The Citadel battled with Mercer for every point in a 33-31 marathon that could have gone either way. After losing the second set 25-23, the Bulldogs kept the match going with a 25-19 third set victory.

Outside hitter Moriah Smith finished with 19 kills and 16 digs, which marked her 10th double-double of the season. Right side hitter Megan Sowell totaled 17 digs for the Bulldogs, while middle hitter Sarah Dobrich added eight kills and five block assists.

Not only was Sunday's victory the first SoCon win for the Bulldogs in nearly five years, it was also the first victory over Furman in program history. The Bulldogs will attempt to topple another team for the first time on Tuesday against Mercer, who own a 6-0 record all-time against The Citadel.

Against Furman, libero Samantha Espy continued her ascension to the top of the record books, moving into second place in career digs in program history with 1,280 digs. The senior is just 171 digs away from passing record holder Rachel Sanders (2005-08).

Tuesday's match will also be the beginning of a three match road trip for The Citadel, who will travel to Chattanooga on Friday and ETSU on Saturday.
