CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team will face its first full Southern Conference road trip of the season, visiting Samford on Saturday and Furman on Sunday.
This will be the Bulldogs (6-13, 0-4 SoCon) first back-to-back road SoCon matches of the season after playing one road match at Western Carolina on Sept. 25.
The Bulldogs are looking for their first SoCon win of the season, falling in four sets at home against Wofford and UNCG last weekend.
The Citadel ranks second in the SoCon in total digs (1164) and digs per set (15.95). Leading the way in digs for the Bulldogs is libero
Samantha Espy who ranks third in the SoCon in total digs with 304 and fifth in digs per set with 4.16.
Espy also continues to climb the ladder in The Citadel record books, ranking third all-time in total digs (1214). She is just 27 digs behind Tatum Jestilla (2007-10) and 236 short of record holder Rachel Sanders (2005-08).
Helping the Bulldogs rank second in digs the SoCon is outside hitter
Moriah Smith who is ninth in the conference with 3.27 digs per set and 239 total digs. Smith not only contributes defensively for the Bulldogs, but is one of the most utilized offensive weapons in the SoCon. Smith continues to pace the conference in both total kills (296) and kills per set (4.05).
Samford enters Saturday's contest with a 10-8 overall record, 1-2 in SoCon play and 6-2 at home. Furman is 7-9 overall, but 3-1 in the SoCon and 4-0 at home this season.
The Bulldogs' match against Samford is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. They will then travel to Greenville, South Carolina for a 2 p.m. match against Furman on Sunday. Live video and stats will be available for both matches.
