CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's basketball team made 17 three-pointers and
Zane Najdawi posted his second consecutive double-double as the Bulldogs rolled to a 146-84 win over Johnson University (Fla.) on Sunday afternoon. The 146 points shattered the previous program record for most points in a game by 14.
Â
The Bulldogs (1-1) got off to a quick start in the game and never slowed down, scoring five points in the first 35 seconds thanks to a three-pointer by
Matt Frierson and a layup by
Leandro Allende.
Aaron Washington extended The Citadel's lead to 13-5 three minutes later, draining a three-pointer for the first points of his career. Washington finished the game with seven points and two steals.
Â
The Bulldogs continued to pour it on and with 6:37 left in the first half led 51-26 after
Bobby Duncan made a tough layup and then converted the and-one. Frierson drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game with 3:42 remaining in the half to pad the 'Dogs lead to 28. The sophomore finished the game with 21 points, nailing seven three-pointers and recording five steals in just his second career start.
Â
The Citadel took a 66-43 lead into the halftime break, tallying 30 points off of 18 forced turnovers. The 66 points marked the first time since Nov. 27, 2015, that the 'Dogs scored at least 60 points in a half.
Â
The game also marked the first time since Feb. 27 vs. VMI that The Citadel hit at least 10 three-pointers in a game. The 17 treys made by the 'Dogs ties for fourth best in program history.
Â
Najdawi picked up right where he left off on Friday, pouring in 26 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in just 18 minutes of action. The sophomore finished the game 10-for-11 from the free throw line and has missed just one free throw in his last 21 attempts.
Â
Brian White finished one rebound shy of a double-double, chipping in 18 points and nine rebounds.
Warren Sledge also came up just short of a double-double as the senior dished out 10 assists and scored eight points. Freshman
Frankie Johnson finished the game with 13 points and three steals.
Â
The 39 turnovers forced by the Bulldogs' defense ranks as the second most in program history and is the most since last year when Coach
Duggar Baucom's squad forced 34 against Bob Jones. The Citadel grabbed 67 rebounds in the non-conference contest, setting a new program record that stood since 1978. The Bulldogs also set a single-game steals record with 27, breaking the previous record set on Nov. 28, 2005, by one.
Â
The Bulldogs continue their non-conference home slate on Tuesday when they welcome Truett-McConnell to McAlister Field House. Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m. with an ESPN3 broadcast and live stats will be available at CitadelSports.com.
